Portugal: Raise your wages to a livable minimum wage.
It is increasingly terrifying to see how little the minimum wage is for people.
I understand that me coming to Portugal as an expat I do introduce problems, and I wish that the citizens of Portugal would be paid a livable minimum wage.

The problem is not the minimum wage, the problem are the insane taxes. Right now, companies are struggling to stay afloat, as a wage easily costs nearly double the employee’s liquid salary. If it’s somewhat over the minimum wage, then it actually does cost double the employee’s liquid salary. So if you want to pay someone €3000, get ready to have a €6000 expense.
There’s a reason no one creates companies in Portugal.
Fix the taxes and release the economy from the stranglehold its in, so it can finally breathe. Salaries will start rising shortly after.

Declaring higher wages from thin air won’t help anybody, will get the country even more in debt.
What would make more sense is incentivizing working, remove taxes on recently opened businesses that create jobs and would not otherwise open at all.
Many businesses like copy/print shops or haircut salons or nail studios take only cash because they won’t survive paying official taxes and fees.
But by making it legal and having bare minimum digital sign up + if we go further - stablecoin payments which are instant and cheap compared to bank payments that have large fees and not suitable for smaller payments.
They’re killing entrepreneurship and opportunities for the whole population

Jesus. Salaries are low because of TAXES.
Increasing the minimum wage simply increases unemployment.
Companies aren’t started because of TAXES.
Companies don’t grow because of TAXES.
Employees get a fraction of their pay because of TAXES.
This is basic economics.

Raising just the minimum wage has been catastrophic, as police, teachers, nurses, qualified people working in state bureaus, have been caught up by the minimum wage and related price increases.
I’d focus on building housing and incentivising more housing onto the market, and overall try to keep prices from increasing a lot, good public transport, before going on more and more wage increases, that keep pushing prices.

For context: The incidence of the national minimum wage in new contracts increased by 1.8 percentage points between 2015 and 2022, to 31.4%”, highlights the Portuguese central bank, in the analysis based on data from the Staff Tables relating only to full-time employees (excluding agriculture and fishing).
